New Water Supply Scheme for Thari women

Since the time immemorial water has occupied great importance in the life and socio economic development of the people through out world. One of the targeted areas of Rural Women Welfare Organization is White Desert locally Called Acharo Thar. Geographically this area is divided in to four regions 1. Mehrano 2. Runj 3. Thar 4. Drehain. The people of Thar always pray for heavy rain because there is no source of canal water through out Thar. The cultivation of various crops or fodder for their livestock depends upon rain shower only.

There are very rare wells or natural ponds (locally called TANKA) in the desert area from which people and livestock drink water. Firstly the wells of water are not sweet secondly water is generally found in depth ranges from 140 to 250 ft. So in search of sweet water women sustain heavy work load as fetching of water is the traditional responsibility of women.

Keeping in view the problems related with women in fetching of water for family members.Organization with consultation of stake holders requested for the support of project entitled as "Water Supply Scheme for Thari Women" from the Federal Ministry of Women Development and Special Education Islamabad. The concerned Ministry approved the project for Thari Women. Currently Rural Women Welfare Organization is installing 40 Jiyapo Hand Pumps out these 11 Hand Pumps have been installed so far in the different villages of the area and other 29 will be installed as project is in implementation phase.

The working area of the project is stretched over the 70 square kms, by the end of this project more than 8000 inhabitants with thirsty livestock in thousands will be benefited. Prior to this project organization has already installed 40 jiyapo Hand Pumps in the same area(White Desert) with support of TVO/EC in the year 2000-2002. Organizational strength is rooted in the participatory methodology for collective development of the stake holders with especial focus on the women empowerment.

It is highly imperative for the Gender main streaming to present the vulnerable segment of the population (women and girls) in the field of development. RWWO has been working in this deprived area since its inception and has had carried out number of developmental interventions e.g. Health Education and Medication, Rain Water Harvesting, Micro Financing, Gynecological Camps, Disaster Prevention and Preparedness and Live Stock Management.

No one can deny the importance of the education. It is basic tool towards the development, keeping in view the importance of education organization has established 3 Functional Literacy Schools for the girls and women to raise the literacy level of vulnerable girls and women of the White Desert . .
